Academy Award-Nominated Io Capitano – Phoenix-area Theatrical Release!

February 23, 2024 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm
On Friday, February 23, there will be the of opening of Matteo Garrone’s (Gomorrah, Dogman) Academy Award-nominated latest film Io Capitano, in theaters in the Phoenix area at Harkins Theatres Shea 14. On March 15, it will be released in Sedona at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre. Io Capitano had its world premiere at the 80th Venice International Film Festival, and it was an Official Selection at the San Sebastian Festival, Palm Springs International Film Festival, and AFI Fest.
Winner of the Silver Lion for Best Director and the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Young Actor at the Venice International Film Festival — for newcomer Seydou Sarr, making his feature-film debut — Io Capitano was Italy’s submission and is nominated for the best International Feature at the 96th Academy Awards. Capturing the contemporary immigrant experience from the perspective of people making the crossing through Africa into Europe, Io Capitano was cast largely with non-professional actors, including Sarr and Moustapha Fall, building on the great tradition of Italian neorealism. Io Capitano was filmed on location in Senegal, Morocco, and the waters off Marsala, Italy.
In this acclaimed film, which won top directing and acting prizes at the Venice Film Festival, writer-director Garrone presents a “reverse shot” of the immigration experience while unfurling an epic, cinematographically magnificent odyssey from West Africa to Italy. The story is told through the mind’s eye and experiences of two Senegalese teenagers living in Dakar who yearn for a brighter future in Europe. Yet between their dreams and reality lies a treacherous journey through a labyrinth of checkpoints, the scorched Saharan desert, a fetid North African prison and the vast waters of the Mediterranean where thousands have died packed inside vessels barely fit for passage. With all that this Italian drama touches on, we wanted to reach out to see if there were any opportunities to collaborate with you on our opening of the film in Phoenix.

Official Synopsis:

Drawing parallels to SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, IO CAPITANO narrates the epic journey of a teenage boy and his cousin as they decide to leave Dakar in Senegal for the promise of Europe. Throughout this compelling odyssey, the young man confronts a myriad of challenges, from the harsh realities of the desert to the harrowing experiences in Libyan detention centers and the risks of the open sea.

Filmed over a span of 13 weeks in Senegal, Italy, and Morocco, with a cast of non-professional actors, this uplifting film ventures into the intricacies and contradictions of the human experience. Within the narrative, the aspirations, dreams, and ambitions of the main characters evolve into a gripping struggle for survival, reflecting the indomitable spirit of those who dare to seek a better life.

IO CAPITANO stands as a powerful exploration of human resilience, navigating the delicate balance between hope and the unforgiving realities of the world.
